Exploring Ecuador - Day 2 - Macas to Riobamba

Dear Family and Friends,

We enjoyed our stay at Hosteria Farallon so much that after breakfast Chuck made a reservation for us to stay there on our way back to Cuenca at the end of this trip.

We packed our luggage in Puff Puff and drove back through Macas and on to the highway up to Riobamba.

Like the highway from Cuenca to Macas, the highway to Riobamba is full of curves plus landslides when the hills are saturated with water.  Sometimes it can be quite foggy.  The ride can be awe inspiring beautiful and at the same time scary.

We passed banana fields just outside of Macas.  Here are some workers cleaning up and it looks like they are planting a new crop.

A couple of surveyors working on the side of the road.

As we climbed we left the fog behind us.  Very pretty looking down on it...not so pleasant riding through it.

A great view of the river below.  I love how everything is so lush.

We went through areas like this, where the landslides had taken out the road.

There was not much traffic on the road so Chuck said we could easily stop for photos.  Below is a picture I made of Puff Puff while taking other photos.

A beautiful water filled waterfall in the distance.

More fog and landslides.

And more beautiful waterfalls...near

and far.
We finally made it to the summit and instantly the terrain changed. You might recognize this lake from our trip to Riobamba about a month ago.

Cautious driver

After crossing the summit, we drove down through farm country on our way to Riobamba.  Here are some photos I was able to take of the people who live there as we were driving along.

We finally made it to our hotel in Riobamba and celebrated Chuck's birthday with a nice dinner before retiring to our room and getting a good night's sleep.

The next day we enjoyed a tour of historical Riobamba, which I will share with you next time.

Love,

Nancy and Chuck
