Zhangjiajie, China

Dear Family and Friends

After telling our family and new friends goodbye, Chuck and I flew to Zhangjiajie, China to begin our tour of southern China.  We booked a private tour with an English speaking tour guide.  It was only Chuck, me, our tour guide and driver.

Zhangjiajie is sort of like Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  It exists, mainly as a tourist hub, for all the people that come to see the mountains.

These mountains are very unique.  I learned from the man sitting next to me on the flight there that these mountains were used as the backdrop in the movie Avatar.

On day one, we went to the top of this mountain.  We got to the top via a high speed elevator.

Here is Chuck with the mountains in the background.

The mountains are full of monkeys. They are everywhere. However, it is not a good idea to feed them or even carry food in a plastic bag, because they will attack and take what they want.  They were fun to observe.

Here we are waiting our turn for the elevator ride up the side of the mountain.

Looking out as we ascended.

When we got on top of the mountain, it was cloudy and rainy.  We enjoyed seeing the sights up there, but we could not see anything but clouds when we looked out as we walked around the perimeter.

If you did not feel like walking very much, this man and his buddy would gladly haul you around.

Oh, and by the way, Chuck and I were not the only tourists up top.  We were, however, the only non Chinese tourists.

We had a beautiful walk up there.

We came down by a sky lift.  This is our tour guide.

We were fortunate to get a car with a glass bottom.  About every tenth car or so is fitted out this way.

A view on the way down.

The next post will about our hike in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, at bottom of these peaks.

Love,
Nancy
