Stonehenge and More

Dear Family and Friends,

On Saturday, we left on our tour very early.  The reason was so we could arrive at Stonehenge when it first opened to avoid the crowds.  It was great as we had a nice visit with very few people.

As you can see in the photos, we were blessed with a beautiful sunny sky that morning.

This is so typical almost anywhere you go.  I photographed the ladies lined up waiting for their turn to use the restroom at Stonehenge.

I turned around and photographed the line of men waiting for the restroom.

After we left Stonehenge, the skies got dark and we were back to usual weather for the UK this time of year.

The picture below was taken from our van. This is the Westbury White Horse. The origin of this horse is obscure, but is said by some to have been created in the iron age.  The horse is 180 ft. tall and 170 ft. wide.  It is intended to be seen from the ground rather than from the air because it is built on the side of a hill.
The horse can be viewed from 16 miles away.

We went to the Avebury Stone Circles.  These huge stones placed in a huge circle are about a thousand years older than Stonehenge.  The circle of stones were so big that I could not photograph them.  I did however, take photos of the village located next to them.

The village church and cemetery.

Thatched roof house.

Another stone house with an English style garden in front.

Another great day seeing this part of the world.

We had to pack up on Saturday evening because on Sunday we took a train to Southampton to board our ship for a cruise around the British Isles.

More to come in the next post.

Love,
Nancy
